There are several signs your switchboard may need upgrading. If your home still has ceramic rewirable fuses instead of modern circuit breakers, that's the clearest indicator. Frequent tripping, flickering lights when appliances turn on, a burning smell near the meter board, or visible scorch marks all suggest the switchboard is struggling to handle your electrical load. Homes built before the 1990s often lack safety switches (RCDs), which are now required under NSW electrical regulations. If you're planning to add air conditioning, a pool, solar panels, or an EV charger, your existing switchboard may not have the capacity to support additional circuits safely.
A switchboard upgrade typically takes between four and eight hours for a standard residential property, and power will need to be switched off for most of that time. We coordinate with your energy distributor (usually Ausgrid on the Northern Beaches) to arrange a temporary disconnection if required. Most upgrades are completed in a single day, so you'll have full power restored by the afternoon or evening. We recommend planning the work for a day when you can be flexible — charge devices beforehand and avoid scheduling anything that relies on power.
In many cases, yes. EV chargers — particularly Level 2 units — draw significant power (typically 7kW to 22kW), which requires a dedicated circuit with adequate capacity. Older switchboards often don't have enough spare circuit breaker slots or sufficient amperage to safely support an EV charger alongside your existing household load. A switchboard upgrade ensures your board has the capacity, the correct safety switches (RCDs), and proper circuit protection to handle the charger safely and compliantly. We assess your switchboard as part of every EV charger installation quote, so you'll know upfront whether an upgrade is needed.
